To the north, the gateway to Italy. To the south, the key to the Alps. The location of Ticino`s capital made the Lombardic-style city a constant bone of contention between the Dukes of Milan and the Swiss. Although Bellinzona has a new industrial district, the city is still dominated by its three "impregnable"- fortifications, designated a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. The castles of Castelgrande, Montebello and Sasso Corbaro are extremely well-preserved examples of medieval fortress architecture.
